The goldfish was developed in China and descended from the Prussian carp. The koi carp was developed in Japan and is descended from the common carp. So they are related, but not of the same species.
Outside of Japan, the world has only known the different color patterns of koi since 1914. During an exhibition in Tokyo, the koi was displayed then. Today, at least 11 different color variations exist.
