These fish live in the wild in Lake Malawi. This African lake is almost 600 kilometres long and 75 kilometres wide. More species of fish live in Lake Malawi than anywhere else in the world. Most of these fish are cichlids. In total, around 800 different species of cichlids live in this lake.
When a female of these cichlids lays eggs, she eats them afterwards. She does not swallow them, but keeps the eggs in her mouth. There she keeps the eggs safe for two to four weeks. During that time, she does not eat anything. When they hatch, mum spits out the young fish.
