Big jump

The female mandarin duck makes her nest in a hole in a tree. That is sometimes as high as several meters. When the young hatch, they may still be do not fly. Still, they need to get to the water almost immediately from the nest. They then just jump out of the tree and drop meters down.

Far from home

Mandarin ducks belong in Asia, but you can also find them in almost all of Europe encountered in the wild. These ducks are commonly kept in castle gardens, city parks and in people's homes. If they escape then, they are fine in survive the European wild. About 800 currently live in the Netherlands in the wild.
