Collaboration with organizations

NVD

The NVD (Dutch Association of Zoos) is the umbrella organization of Dutch zoos. Membership in the NVD can be considered a seal of quality for Dutch zoos. NVD member zoos work closely together in the areas of animal management, education, recreation, regulation, nature conservation and research.

EAZA

Effective management of animal populations requires cooperation with zoos outside the Netherlands. AquaZoo Leeuwarden is also a member of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). EAZA membership can also be seen as a hallmark of quality, but then for European zoos. This label guarantees quality regarding nutrition, care, research, nature protection and housing of the animals. Approximately 350 zoos within Europe are members of EAZA. Exchanges of animals with one of these zoos are preferred.
