The purpose of the breeding program is to ensure healthy populations in zoos of wild vulnerable or endangered species. The polar bear breeding program coordinator, together with a committee and with the help of a computer program, determines where polar bears will be placed and which polar bear can have cubs with which other polar bear.
The breeding program owns the polar bears, so they decide which zoo gets which polar bear. AquaZoo was thus assigned Felix. Even when a zoo closes, the program determines where the animals go.
Polar bears in zoos act as a kind of backup for wildlife. Should polar bears become extinct, a population can be saved by the polar bears living in zoos. They can, if conditions are good and safe enough again, be released into the wild. This way, a healthy population of polar bears in the wild can then be rebuilt.
