Why polar bears?

Challenge

  • Polar bears do not like regularity: they like to be challenged.

  • To ensure that the polar bear is sufficiently entertained, we provide varied activities.

  • Because polar bears in nature also always find their food in different places, we also always offer the food somewhere else.

Did you know that swimming ponds are used to provide additional challenges for polar bears?

In nature, polar bears search for food in different places. In a zoo, of course, they obtain this food a lot easier. To make sure they don't get bored, the animal keepers regularly provide extra challenges. They do this by offering the food in varied ways or by spreading scents in the enclosure.

In addition, group composition can also play a role in providing enrichment. This is because the polar bears can then work together to try to uncover scents or obtain food.

When polar bears are not sufficiently stimulated, they start walking up and down - the familiar pacing. This is stereotypical behavior and is also called zoochosis. At Aquazoo, we provide enough challenge to prevent this.
