Native nature
The park is home to many animal species that are not part of AquaZoo Leeuwarden's collection, but are often just as endangered as some of the species in the park. For example, regular bird counts are done in the park to contribute to the conservation of wild (water) birds in the Netherlands.
Birds/waterfowl
To prevent crumbling, many banks in the Netherlands have been cut at an angle or barricaded. But the very straight, vertical, banks are a perfect nesting place for bank swallows and kingfishers. Because of all the excavated and barricaded banks, the numbers of bank swallows and kingfishers have dropped sharply. AquaZoo hosts a wall for the bank swallow. Several flocks of kingfishers have also been spotted. Several successful flocks of wild storks can also be found in the trees at AquaZoo in the meantime.
The bee hotel
About eighty percent of the world's food crops depend on pollination by insects. This makes bees indispensable to nature. The use of insecticides, the decrease in food supply and the shortage of suitable nesting sites are causing a sharp decline in the population of wild bees.
To support the wild bee in the Netherlands, AquaZoo, in cooperation with the elf city bee ribbon, has placed a bee hotel in the park. This provides safe nesting opportunities for the bees and also symbolizes chemical-free management of weeds and pests. The bee hotel can be found on the walking trail from AquaZoo . Fear of the wild bees is not necessary, wild bees will rarely if ever sting.
