AquaZoo celebrates 20th anniversary with temporary exhibit: Ocean Bricks
It has been twenty years this year since AquaZoo Leeuwarden first opened its doors as a zoo. The years before that, the location functioned as a recreational area and as otter park AquaLutra. The anniversary will be celebrated this year with, among other things, the temporary exhibition: Ocean Bricks. From April 1, more than twenty special animals can be admired. In fact, the animals are made of thousands of building bricks.
General manager Jeroen Loomeijer: "We are very much looking forward to celebrating AquaZoo's twentieth anniversary with the visitors. Especially for the occasion, the mayor of Leeuwarden, Sybrand Buma, is coming to perform the opening ceremony. And he who celebrates his birthday has a treat! We will hand over 250 tickets to the mayor. The tickets will then go to families who cannot afford a day at the zoo."
Exposition
The life-like structures can be admired from Saturday, April 1 through Sunday, June 18. The unusual animals can be seen throughout the park. One of the structures is an orca with young. The structure is made with 223,259 Bricks bricks weighing over 1,100 kilograms and it took 550 hours to make the structure.
At the structures, there are signs with information about the number of bricks used, the number of construction hours and the weight. There is also an educational edge to this special exhibit, as visitors learn more about species not normally seen in the park.
