AquaZoo welcomes two giant otters
AquaZoo has welcomed two male giant otters from an animal park in Denmark. AquaZoo is the only animal park in the Netherlands with giant otters; there are now five in total.
The two new giant otters are named Nacho and Viggo and are both three years old. They have already explored their new enclosure and have been introduced to the other three giant otters at Aquazoo. They can be admired at AquaZoo in both their indoor and outdoor enclosures.
Endangered species
A total of only 55 giant otters live in European zoos. Together, the zoos have set up a breeding program to conserve the species. In the wild they are found in the tropical rain forests of South America, but there their survival is threatened. Due to the destruction of the animals' habitat and hunting for their fur, the population of giant otters in the wild is dwindling.
