Kerstbomen tweede leven bij AquaZoo Leeuwarden

Eighty Christmas trees get second life

Eighty Frisians handed in their Christmas trees at AquaZoo Leeuwarden. The zoo collected Christmas trees on 3 January to recycle them in a sustainable way. A prize was also awarded to the person with the tallest Christmas tree: the Elsma family handed in one measuring no les than 220 centimetres.

'Many Christmas trees end up in the rubbish after the holidays, while they are often still perfectly usable. With this action, we prove that things can be done differently', says general manager Jeroen Loomeijer. A large proportion of the trees will be planted in the park to green the area and provide animals with additional hiding places. Trees that are nog longer suitable to be planted serve as enrichment for the animals. In this way, all collecte trees get a second life.

Loomeijer: 'AquaZoo is committed to protecting nature and wants to inspire visitors to do the same. This annual Christmas tree collection is therefore a fine tradition'.
