Last marine fish from De Noordhoren arrive at AquaZoo Leeuwarden
At AquaZoo Leeuwarden today, the last fish from the Wadden Experience Center De Noordhoren were added to the Wadden Sea aquarium.
The dogfish, eel, spotted ray and pipefish, after a temporary stay elsewhere, are now permanently swimming around in their familiar aquarium at the Leeuwarden Zoo. The fish are hereby reunited with the clams, tongues, plaice and sea turtles that moved to the zoo a little earlier.
ShowingGeneral manager Jeroen Loomeijer can't wait to show the new acquisitions to the public. "As a zoo we are in the middle of the Frisian society and nature. And this nature is beautiful. We would like to tell our visitors more about it. The Wadden Sea is a unique area and is only thirty kilometers away from here. It's fantastic that we can now pay more attention to this at AquaZoo."
AquaZoo took over the animals and their enclosures from the Wadden Experience Center De Noordhoren, which was founded in 2009 after the Wadden Sea was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. The objective was to establish a center with good, clear, educational and also fun facts and trivia about the Wadden Sea region.
Larger audienceLast December, the aquarium, the mud basin, in which ebb and flow is simulated, and various information materials already moved to the Frisian zoo. Here they have been rebuilt and work is underway to create a space where the story of the Wadden Sea can be told even better to an even larger audience. The official opening is expected to be later this spring.
