Seal born at AquaZoo!

For the first time since the opening of the spacious, interactive seal enclosure at AquaZoo Friesland, a seal has been born! Mother Loes and her little one are doing well, although the first period is always exciting. After all, the cub has to start drinking properly from its mother. The keepers have not yet been able to determine the sex of the seal.

A total of 11 harbor seals now live in the seal enclosure at AquaZoo that covers nearly two acres. Visitors with a little luck can see the newborn seal with one of the beach viewers at the edge of the enclosure.

Common seals

Common seals are common in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. After 10.5 months of gestation, one young is born and can swim immediately. The extra fat mother's milk causes the cub to be twice as heavy after four weeks as it was at birth. The suckling period lasts about four to five weeks.
